Hardy — The Quiet Eastern Shore

Hardy sits on the eastern shoulder of Smith Mountain Lake, where the water bends north toward Penhook and the Blue Ridge starts to soften into rolling pasture. It's quieter than Moneta — fewer marinas, more long views, the kind of place where the dock you can see across the cove belongs to the same family it did twenty years ago.

Buyers come to Hardy for two things: distance from the busier Bedford-side traffic, and a different feel underfoot — more woods, more pasture, a longer back road home. Many of the lakefront streets here are paved but slow, and the houses sit on more land than their Moneta equivalents. It's a Franklin County address, which matters for taxes, school assignment, and the rhythm of the local government you'll deal with.

Inventory turns slowly. The same handful of coves rotate sellers every few years, and the homes are often held by the people who built them. When something good lists in Hardy, it doesn't sit long. Off-water and land-only opportunities are more common here than further west.
