Union Hall — Deep Water and Long-Held Coves

Union Hall is one of the lake's quietly serious addresses — a Franklin County community that wraps the south-central shore from the Penhook side back toward Moneta. It's where a number of the lake's longest-tenured families live, and where some of the better deep-water inventory hides in coves that don't show up on the standard tourist maps.

The community itself is small — a crossroads more than a town — but the surrounding lakefront is substantial. Many of the coves here run deep right up to the shoreline, which means dock placement is straightforward and water access stays usable through winter drawdown. The homes range from older lake cottages on legacy lots to more recently built estates set well back from the water.

What Union Hall doesn't have is the marina-and-restaurant density of Westlake. What it does have is privacy, deep water, and a settled feel — neighbors who've been here thirty years, slower turnover, and a road grid that thins out the further you go from Route 40. For buyers who want a real lake home rather than a lake amenity address, Union Hall earns its place on the shortlist.

The drive into Westlake for groceries and dining runs twenty to twenty-five minutes; downtown Rocky Mount is a similar haul in the other direction.
